What Remote Control Works with My Overhead Door Python Opener?

What replacement remote control works with my Overhead Door Python garage door opener?

It can be very confusing.

There are so many different options.

Some remote controls work with Series I. Some remote controls work with Series II. To make matters worse, the remote control you received when the Python opener was installed is no longer available.

overhead door remote control part number 1702Overhead Door has discontinued the old style #1702 remote control.

What do you do?

First, lets try to explain the evolution of the Overhead Door Python garage door opener...

The first series of Python openers came out with a rolling code technology called "Code Dodger (Generation I) or CD for short. The first series of model numbers were listed as OCG510 anf OCG710

The second series of Python openers came out with magnetic limit switches and were referred to as Code Dodger (Generation II). The second series of models numbers were listed as OCG550 and OCG750.

The final series of Python openers were updated with an improved circuit board and continued to use the Code Dodger technology but were referenced as Generation III. The third series of model numbers we listed as OCG600ML and OCG800ML.

Now let try to simplify things...

Regardless of which series of Code Dodger Legacy opener you have installed there are three (3) remote controls that we recommend to use with the Overhead Door Pything garage door opener. One option is a standard (3) button remote control (part #37517R). The second option is the mini CD remote control (part #38502R). The last option is the Master remote control which can be considered a "universal" remote control for any Code Dodger garage door opener. The part number for the Master remote control is #37345R

These remote controls are available on our online parts store at www.OverheadDoorPartsOnline.com.

Please note:

When trying to program the #37517R remote to openers from the Code Dodger era of November 1995 to the end of 1997, only the button farthest to the right will program.

If I program my homelink to work my remote control units don't work. If I program the remotes to work the homelink won't work! Is there a way to get both to work?
Posted @ Thursday, October 31, 2013 8:10 AM by Dona
The Python garage door opener is limited as to the number of items that can be programmed in to operate the opener.

If you program a remote control into the circuit board and another remote control is erased, that means all the programming channels are full. When all the programming channels are full and a new remote control is programmed the circuit board will randomly delete a previously programmed item.

If you need to program more the 5 items (including remotes, key pads and homelink), I would recommend to install an external radio receiver to add more programming channels.

To order an external radio receiver for the Overhead Door Python garage door opener, use the link listed below.

I have only 2 remotes and a keypad outside the garage. I programmed the homelink in my vehicle, and the two openers don't work. Then I reprogrammed the 2 remotes to work and now the homelink doesn't work. If all were programmed, there would be atotal of 4 items programmed.
Posted @ Thursday, October 31, 2013 11:02 AM by Dona
Since you continue to program/reprogram the remotes and homelink, all your channels are full.

You will need to erase everything out of the circuit boards memory and start over.

You will need to erase everything out of the circuit boards memory and start over. How do I do this?
Posted @ Monday, December 02, 2013 11:59 AM by michael
To erase the memory, press and hold down the learn code button on the garage door opener motor. The LED next to the learn code button will start flashing. Hold the button down until the LED stops flashing. All remote controls will be erased.

To reprogram everything, refer to the Programming procedures in the owner's manual.

We bought a house with a Python OCG550 opener. However, the previous owners have lost the remotes. My wife purchased a Chamerlain KLIK1U but it does seem to work even after clearing the previous codes. Is the KLIK1U compatible with the OCG550?

Will a LiftmasterG387LM entry system work on an Overhead OCG550 opener?
Posted @ Saturday, October 25, 2014 9:07 AM by Bill Smith
The Lift Master 387LM keyless entry will work with the Overhead Door OCG550 garage door opener. However, I have heard complaints from customers that is is difficult to program and doesn't always work.

I would recommend the Overhead Door OKP-BX keyless entry. This keyless entry is specifically designed to work with all Overhead Door Code Dodger garage door openers such as the OCG550.
