Remote Controls for Older Model Overhead Door Openers

Was your Overhead Door garage door opener installed prior to 1995?

If you answered YES to this question, do you know what replacement remote control will operate your Overhead Door garage door opener?

The purpose of this article is to outline how to order a replacement remote control for your older (pre-1995) Overhead Door garage door opener.

There are several remote controls that are available for Overhead Door garage door openers installed prior to 1995.  These remote controls are differentiated by the radio frequency that they transmit. The most common radio frequency is 390mhz. Other radio frequencies include: 312, 340, 380, and 412mhz.

Unfortunately, replacement remote controls that transmit at 340mhz are no longer available. However, in this particular case, you can install a universal radio receiver kit so that you can continue to operate your older model Overhead Door garage door opener with a hand-held remote control.

The 390mhz remote control is compatible with the following Overhead Door garage door openers:

455, 456390 frequency remote control

550, 551, 555, 556

655, 656

1055, 1056

The following Overhead Door garage door openers may be compatible with a 340, 360 or 380mhz remote control.

45, 45A, 45B, 45C, 450

55, 55A, 55B, 55C

65, 65A, 65B, 65C

1000, 1000A

Please note that any remote control where the frequency is followed by letters (for example 360-BBC) are still available.

Any remote control where the frequency is followed by number (for example 360-188) are no longer available and can not be ordered.

I am trying to find the owners manual for the Model 1056 and cannot find it anywhere. I am trying to program a universal remote that is compatable with the 390 MHz which is what my garage door opener is running but I don't know the button to press for programming
Posted @ Saturday, November 03, 2012 8:59 PM by Todd
Unfortunately, I do not have access to an owner's manual for the model #1056. The owner's manual for the 556/656 would be helpful since the programming instructions are the same. This owner's manual can be found at the following link. http://www.overheaddoorpartsonline.com/products/MODEL-%23-556-%26-656-OWNER%27S-MANUAL.html

I am not aware of any universal remote control that works with the 1056 except for the Overhead Door Master Remote Control. The Overhead Door Master remote can be ordered atwww.OverheadDoorPartsOnline.com at the following link. http://www.overheaddoorpartsonline.com/master-remote-overhead-door-37345r/

Another option is to order the 390 remote control. This remote control can be ordered using the following link. http://www.overheaddoorpartsonline.com/products/TRANSMITTER-%252d-390-1-CHANNEL.html

I just moved into a home with an Overhead Door 55B unit that works just fine, but no remote. The board inside the unit says the frequency is "380-BBB". Following the links for 380 in this article goes to dead link... is the 380 no longer available?

I also moved to a new house with a very older Overhead Door opener. I can't seem to locate a MHz code on it anywhere inside or outside the box. The Model # is R 80 AZ, and the serial # is 7601.

Unfortunately, replacement remote controls for the Overhead Door #80 AZ are no longer available.

Your only option would be to purchase a universal radio receiver kit. The receiver kit includes an external radio receiver, a hand-held remote control and a transformer.

I have purchased a home with a garage door opener 55A. I have a universal remote with a frequency of 360 and it doesn;t seem to work. Any other things I need to do on the initial set up?? Thanks!
Posted @ Monday, October 07, 2013 12:31 PM by Jared
The Overhead Door #55A garage door opener could from the manufacturer operating at several different radio frequencies. You will need to determine the correct radio frequency before you determine which remote control will be compatible.

For example, if your #55A garage door opener operates at a 390 or 380 mhz frequency, a 360 mhz remote control will not work.

To determine the correct frequency of your garage door opener, refer to the blog article listed below.

http://www.overheaddooronline.com/blog/bid/110737/My-Overhead-Door-Opener-Doesn-t-Work-with-this-Universal-Remote?&__hssc=&__hstc&hsCtaTracking=664f15cc-bcff-47d7-bd67-c5122821181d%7C6a2660c6-53a0-4bff-9774-195a24a8387e

I have verified that my garage is operating at 360 mhz. My remote is also 360. Any other suggestions??
Posted @ Monday, October 07, 2013 5:30 PM by Jared
What type of universal remote control do you have? Double check to make sure the universal remote control allows you to program 9 dip switch settings.

The universal remote control may not be compatible with the #55 garage door opener.

To order the correct remote control use the link listed below.

http://www.overheaddoorpartsonline.com/remote-control-360-1-channel/

Do you have any other remote controls that work properly?

If not, the radio receiver on the garage door opener may be bad. If this is the case, you may need to order a universal radio receiver kit.

To order a universal radio receiver kit, refer to the link listed below.

I have two OH 55B doors. One is 360MH, the other is 380MH. The problem is I only have one remote and unfortunately, it goes to the door I do not want to use. Can I reprogram my remote from 360MH to the 380MH of the door I want to use?
Posted @ Saturday, December 07, 2013 4:53 PM by Shay
Unfortunately, you can not reprogram a 360 frequency remote control to a 380 frequency.

I would recommend to order a 380Mhz remote control. These remote controls can be ordered online atwww.OverheadDoorPartsOnline.com.

Posted @ Sunday, December 22, 2013 7:19 PM by Renee Hendricks
370 frequency replacement remote controls are not available.

If you need an additional remote control for your Overhead Door 65A garage door opener, I would recommend to install a universal radio receiver kit.

The receiver kit includes an external radio receiver, transformer and hand held remote control and be connected to any model garage door opener.

Universal radio receiver kits can be ordered online atwww.OverheadDoorPartsOnline.com.

Have 65a opener. Wall switch open and closes door but remote suddenly stopped opening. Replaced battery in case it was weak. Lights come on steady in remote but still will not open door. What would be my next step to troubleshoot. Can't find anything like a reset on opener. Can remote be bad yet lights still work? Thank you
Posted @ Saturday, February 01, 2014 6:28 PM by Jamie
The most common reason for your problem, would be a faulty radio receiver assembly on the circuit board inside the garage door opener motor.
Unfortunately, replacement circuit boards/radio receiver assembly have been discontinued and are no longer available.
I would recommend to contact your local Overhead Door distributor by calling 1-800-929-3667.

Unfortunately, you can not retrofit safety sensors to work with an Overhead Door #56A model garage door opener.

I have a model 65B opener and my remote has a sticker on it that indicates Freq. 170- Mfg. 91 140 Is there a compatible remote for this? The remote does have dip switches inside.
Posted @ Tuesday, April 01, 2014 6:27 PM by mike
I am not familiar with a 170 mhz radio frequency. Typically the radio frequency options for the Overhead Door #65B garage door opener are 360, 380 or 390 mhz.

Replacement remote controls using these frequencies are available and can be ordered online atwww.OverheadDoorPartsOnline.com.

I have a 65a solid state opener. I have one working remote, but need another. I bought the 360 MHz, positioned the switches identical to the working remote, but it doesn't operate it. What might I be doing wrong?
Posted @ Friday, April 18, 2014 9:15 PM by Lee
It is possible that the existing remote control and 65A garage door opener are not operating at a 360 frequency.

The 65A could operate a several different frequencies including 340, 360 or 380. The 340 frequency remote controls are no longer available 380 frequency remote controls are available and can be ordered online atwww.OverheadDoorPartsOnline.com.

To determine the frequency of your garage door opener, refer to the blog article listed below

Thanks.

Have 2 '55b' Openers, just replaced the capacitors and they are working excellent now.

I would like to replace the remotes, one is 360mhz and other is 380mhz.

Is there a remote that has 2 buttons that could operate both?
Posted @ Tuesday, May 27, 2014 11:52 PM by James
Unfortunately, there is not a multi-button remote control that can transmit at the 360mhz and 380mhz radio frequency.

I just bought a 1990 house with a 450A opener, which works fine with the 380 mhz remote. I'd like to add an external keypad, preferably wireless. It appears most "universal" keypads won't work with pre-1993 openers. What are my options?
Posted @ Wednesday, June 04, 2014 4:22 PM by Lary
Unfortunately, a wireless key pad is not available for the Overhead Door 450A model garage door opener.

Hi there I just bought a house and it has 2 garage door openers. One is a craftsmen and the other is a Overhead model 555. I would like to control both openers on the same remote. I bought a Chamberlain Clicker Universal (http://www.chamberlain.com/clicker-and-accessories/universal-clicker-products/clicker-universal-remote-control). I was able to program the Craftsmen opener no problem but I m having trouble with the Overhead model 555. Is it possible to run both with this type of remote? Please help

Posted @ Friday, July 18, 2014 4:43 PM by Dave
Unfortunately, the Chamberlain Universal Clicker will not work with the Overhead Door #555 garage door opener.

If you wish for the universal clicker to work both manufacturer garage door openers, I would recommend to install an external radio receiver to the 555 garage door door opener. The external radio receiver will be compatible with the universal clicker.

This external radio receiver can be ordered online atwww.OverheadDoorPartsOnline.com.

The direct link to order the correct external radio receiver is listed below.
