How much does a garage door cost?

Are you thinking about replacing your garage door?

If the answer is yes, then I'm sure the first question that comes to your mind is "How much does a new garage door cost?"

Although this question seems to be simple and straight forward, the answer is actually difficult to answer since there are so many variables than can effect the price of a garage door. In fact, this simple question only creates more questions that need to be answered.

When we work with a homeowner who is interested in replacing a garage door, we often need to go through a series of questions that include:

  • What size is your garage door?
  • Do you have a one car garage or a two car garage?
  • Do you have a color in mind for your new garage door?
  • Are you interested in windows and where in the garage door do you want the windows located?
  • Do you have a panel design in mind for your new garage door?
  • How tall is the ceiling in your garage?
  • Do you currently have an automatic garage door opener installed on your garage door?
  • Is your garage attached to your house or is it a detached garage?
  • What direction does your garage face? North, South, East or West?

Based on the answers to these questions and the interests of a homeowner, we are able to provide a direction as to the options that are available and the type of garage doors that may be the best fit for their home.

At this point, we can begin to provide a price range for a new garage door depending on the different garage door categories. The garage door categories we often reference include: builder grade, classic style and carriage house.

Builder Grade Options

Builder Grade garage doors

A builder grade garage door is an economical option that can include insulated or non-insulated doors. This category of garage door has limited options such as colors, panel designs and window trim. We typically only recommend a builder grade garage door if a customer is interested in a basic garage door for a detached garage.

Classic Style Options

Classic Style garage door

A classic style garage door is a common option our customers select and can be categorized as a highly energy efficient insulated steel door. This categories includes a wide range of colors, panel designs and window trim. The insulation value of a classic style garage door can vary between an R-Value of 9 to an R-Value of 17. Warranties can include a lifetime warranty against rust and a five (5) year warranty on parts including the springs. Because of the many options that are available, a homeowner can very often find a garage door that meets their needs and improves the curb appeal of their home at an economical price.

Carriage House Options

A carriage house garage door is an insulated steel garage door that is designed to resemble a traditional swing open style door. This category provides the value, quality and durability of a classic style garage door but with the traditional look of a custom wood garage door.  A carriage house garage door offers a wide range of both painted and stained colors, window trim and door designs. Warranties can include a lifetime warranty against rust and a one (1) year warranty on parts. The carriage house category is quickly becoming a popular choice for a homeowner who is looking for a quality garage door that uniquely enhances the curb appeal of their home. A homeowner will find that a carriage house style garage door will not only improve the curb appeal of their home but will also enhance the value of their home.

Pricing Summary

Pricing for these three (3) categories of garage doors can vary depending on the size of the door and the options a homeowner selects. However, we have provided an outline of the possible price ranges below.

Schedule a Sales Estimate

In order to receive an actual price for the installation of a new garage door, it is required that a sales professional inspect the job site. In most cases an IDA accredited garage door company will provide free sales estimates.
