When your garage door keypad isn't working, it can disrupt your entire routine. A keyless entry pad sends a signal to your garage door opener, allowing you to open and close the door without a remote or house key. If you are starting keyless garage entry troubleshooting, begin with the simple fixes before assuming the entire keypad needs replacement.
Start With the Battery and Keypad Condition
A dead or weak battery is one of the most common reasons a keypad stops responding. Replace the battery with the correct type, make sure it is seated properly, and test the keypad again. While the cover is open, check for corrosion, moisture, cracked plastic, or buttons that stick when pressed.
If the keypad is mounted outside, dirt and weather can also affect performance. Gently wipe the surface and buttons with a dry cloth to remove buildup.
Check Your PIN and Reprogram the Keypad
If the battery is fresh but the keypad still will not respond, the PIN or programming may be the issue. A keypad can lose its connection to the opener after a battery change, opener reset, or power interruption. Review your owner’s manual and follow the correct reprogramming steps for your model.
If the keypad accepts numbers but the door does not move, the opener may not be receiving the signal.
Look for Wiring or Signal Issues
Some keypad problems come from wiring, signal interference, or opener issues. If your keypad is wired, turn off the power before looking for loose or damaged connections. Do not handle wiring if you are unsure what you are looking at.

When It Is Time to Replace the Keypad
If the buttons are worn, the cover is damaged, or the keypad keeps failing after new batteries and reprogramming, replacement may be the best solution.
